Who wouldn’t want to bring their best friend with them on all of their camping adventures? I don’t know about you, but if I have a chance to bring my dogs with me wherever I go, I do! Dogs absolutely love the outdoors and camping can be such a great experience to have together. We understand that not all dogs are “outside” dogs, but the majority will love the long walks, the fresh air, and all of the together time that you plan on sharing. If you plan on bringing your 4-legged bestie on your next camping trip, here are some tips to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible when camping with dogs.

Location is Key

Before you decide to bring your dog with you, you need to know about the campgrounds. Find out what the facilities are like, what the regulations are, and the trails around the area. This is extremely important to learn before you go so you know it is a safe, dog-friendly park.

You should also avoid going to unfamiliar places if you are just starting to travel with your dog. Make sure to be somewhat close to civilization so you can have access to a vet if need be. Your dog could potentially get into something it shouldn’t or get injured from the trails and if this happens you should know where you need to go and how far away it is from the campground. Being prepared is an important factor when traveling with pets.

Stay safe!

The best way to keep your dog safe is by keeping them on a leash. At home, your lab may love to run in the water and hike the trails with you. While you are at an unfamiliar campground, it is important to keep the dog on the leash so that you can control where they go and what they are getting into. You should also have their collar and ID tags in case they manage to run off somewhere!

Know what to look for, what plants to avoid, and how to make sure your pup stays safe the whole time. Keep them hydrated by packing lots of water and make sure they are eating as much as they can. Check their paws frequently so you can see if they have stepped on anything sharp like thorns or rocks and treat it quickly.  You should also pack a brush or comb for them so you can keep their hair or fur clean from any bugs or burs that they may run into. Lastly, stay ahead of the weather and how your dog is acting. There are days where it may be too hot to take the dog on the hike with you or too cold for them to trek through the snow. Just stick with your gut when it comes to taking your dog on adventures with you.

Pack accordingly

You may think you only need a few things for your dog when you go camping, but you do need to think through the what-ifs! What if there is in-climate weather? What if your dog decides to chase his ball into a giant mud puddle? Make sure to be prepared for just about anything that comes your way!

Bring an additional tent for extra room or have a spare space in your RV just for your dog. Bring their bed as well so they have a place to relax. Pack their shampoo, brush, and all of the necessary medications they are on! This also includes allergy medication if your dog gets into something it shouldn’t and has a reaction. And of course, don’t forget the fun stuff! Bring toys, frisbees, and lots of treats!

Tips for Camping with Dogs

Camping is heaven on earth for a lot of dogs! They get to be outside, exploring and living life with their best human! What could be better? Make sure to have a great time, don’t let the rain dampen your day, and pack everything you need to ensure your pup will have a safe and fun time! Also, we advise you to call the campground ahead of time and see if they have any additional tips or suggestions when bringing your dogs that are specific to that area! Have a great time!
